BMI was originated as Derby Aviation and started out commercial flights in 1949. The airline name became recognised as British Midland before being renamed to BMI in 2002. BMI was the first airline to provide a system of reservation and paying for tickets online, innovating this in 1995. BMI is the second largest operator at London Heathrow, from where it flies across the United Kingdom, European Union, the Middle East and Africa. The airline as well flies to to the north America and the Caribbean from Manchester airport. BMI is part of the Star Alliance group.
BMI is best known for providing excellent value offers on business, premium economy and economy cabins on its major business routes and long-haul flights. There is a single-class cabin on other domestic and European flights.All BMI flights provide a complimentary checked luggage allowance. BMI is presently in the process of equipping its long haul aircrafts with flat beds in business class.
BMI operates a frequent flyer programme for its customers called the Diamond Club. Points are collected by flying with BMI and making reservations with their partners. The scheme offers four different levels of membership – Blue, Blue plus, Silver and Gold. All members can claim free flights, with additional benefits for Silver and Gold members, including ariport lounge access and an added baggage margin. Gold membership also offers four complimentary upgrades a year. BMI also operates an excellent reward programme called Highflyers, this scheme is specially designed for PAs and secretaries who could accumulate and mange their company reward accounts. Only Blue and Gold membership levels are applicable for Highflyers and rebates are provided on flights and purchases with other selected partners.
